Darts star's addiction to Football Manager impacted his performances as wife made 'lazy' admission

Football Manager was cited as the driving factor behind the failings of a World Darts Championship star who was branded "lazy" by his wife.

Football Manager 27 is released on 10 November, having been available on early access for a limited period.

The new game promises to again capture the imagination of FM fanatics worldwide and keep them glued to their laptop. Plenty of sports people have admitted to being hooked on the football management game, with France pair Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele both regular players.

But another big FM fan is Kim Huybrechts, a Belgian darts player who got so into the game that his wife blamed it on his poor performance at the oche.

On December 23 2024, he was soundly beaten by Richard Veenstra in the second round of the World Darts Championship – failing to win a single leg in a 3-0 loss.

It was his 13th appearance in the big tournament at Alexandra Palace and he described the loss as "perhaps the biggest disappointment of my career".

But his other half Dana Verhaegen-Huybrechts, also a darts player, laid into him by calling him a "spoiled brat" whilst claiming he is addicted to playing Football Manager.

Speaking to Nieuwsblad Sport, Dana, fumed: "Kim is actually a spoiled brat. He's addicted to Football Manager while I do everything around the house.

"Kim has so much talent, but no character. Lazy is an understatement."

Her frustrations were made clear as she had no doubts about her husband's ability, claiming she believed "he can win against anyone if he is on form".

A former Premier League participant, Huybrechts has five PDC Pro Tour titles to his name and was beaten by Phil Taylor in the 2012 Players Championship Finals.

His best performance in the World Darts Championship saw him get to the quarter-finals, before being defeated by Andy Hamilton.

The 2013 World Cup of Darts finalist has struggled more recently, however, losing in the first round in consecutive years.

The staunch Royal Antwerp fan was once 12th in the PDC rankings when he was in his best period. Between 2013 and 2015, he won the Dutch Darts Masters and European Darts Grand Prix.

However, fast forward to the present day and he is just floating about the top 50 in 46th place.

Although he is not back among the big boys and will have go through extra hoops to be in the World Darts Championship, the 40-year-old has improved and won 100 out of his 151 matches in 2026.

He remains the top ranked Belgian player and back in May, he credited a change in management, working with former player Erik Clarys and the introduction of a dietitian and regular gym session as key factors in his quiet resurgence.

However, he hasn't quite been able to fly up the rankings and stated that the ranking system has made it difficult to get going again after the "downward spiral".

He told the Darts Draait Door Podcast: "Over the years they’ve made the system a bit impossible for people in a difficult phase of their career, but also for new players. The protection of the top players is part of that.”

Treasury projects Ksh5.4 trillion national budget for 2027/2028 financial year

National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has projected a Ksh5.4 trillion budget for the 2027/2028 financial year, representing an increase from the current Ksh4.8 trillion budget.

Speaking during the NCBA Bank 2026 Kenya’s Outlook in Nairobi on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, Mbadi said the proposed budget would be supported by revenue projections of slightly below Ksh4 trillion.

“For the financial year 2027/2028, we are planning a budget of about Ksh5.4 trillion, with revenue projected at just under Ksh4 trillion,” Mbadi said.

The Treasury CS projected a fiscal deficit of 5.9 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), noting that his team was working towards reducing the figure further while making provisions for pending bills and priority government programmes.

“The fiscal deficit is projected at 5.9 per cent of GDP, but I am still working with my team even further down below 5.9 per cent as we provide for pending bills and priority programmes before declining steadily to 4.6 per cent by the financial year 2029/2030,” he stated.

Mbadi said the government had identified five key areas it would focus on to safeguard the country’s economic gains and strengthen public finances.

The first priority involves broadening the tax base without increasing existing tax rates.

According to Mbadi, the Treasury intends to rely on data, technology, improved compliance and administrative reforms to enhance revenue collection.

“One, broadening the tax base but not raising tax rates. Through data, technology and better compliance, administrative reforms, some of which will start taking effect from January next year,” he explained.

The second priority involves improving public expenditure by ensuring the government spends within its means.

Mbadi said the Treasury would embrace zero-based budgeting as part of efforts to improve resource allocation and ensure government spending is directed towards priority programmes.

The National Treasury has set November 16, 2026, as the deadline for submitting Kenya’s 2027 Budget Policy Statement to Parliament, bringing forward the budget process ahead of the August 2027 General Election.

Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi said in a notice on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, that the revised calendar was intended to accommodate the upcoming elections and allow the government to prepare the 2027/28 financial year budget earlier.

“In view of the revised budget calendar to accommodate the General Elections scheduled for August 2027, the 2027 BPS will be submitted to Parliament by 16th November 2026,” Mbadi said in a public notice.
