Celeb Digest: Kanyari's little-known daughter speaks, Yvonne Okwara's new salary revealed

The pushback came just days after two major announcements rocked the local media industry.

On Tuesday, 27 October 2026, Okwara signed off from Citizen TV live on air during her final hosting of The Explainer, drawing the curtain on eight and a half years at the station.

During that time, she built a formidable reputation as a senior news anchor and business editor, fronting Tonight and featuring prominently on the News Gang political discussion segment.

She was also the face behind several high-profile political interviews and moderated presidential debates.

In her farewell remarks, Okwara was clear that stepping away from the newsroom did not mean stepping away from social impact work. It was a transition, she said, into a new kind of leadership.

The very next day, on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, Shuga Global announced her appointment as Head of Investments and Partnerships.

In the role, she will lead the organisation's efforts to forge strategic partnerships, scout investment opportunities and mobilise resources to scale its youth-focused programmes.

Part of her mandate will also involve steering Shuga Global towards more sustainable funding models, reducing its historical dependence on traditional grants.

Shuga Global, formerly known as the MTV Staying Alive Foundation before rebranding in April 2026, is the organisation behind the widely recognised Shuga drama franchise.

It uses storytelling, media and youth engagement to tackle sexual health, HIV prevention and broader social challenges affecting young people.

The relocation rumours appear to have stemmed from Shuga Global's origins as a London-headquartered organisation.

However, Okwara's clarification makes clear that the group's global base has since shifted to Nairobi, making her appointment a local one despite the organisation's international reach.

For Okwara, the move marks the end of roughly 20 years on the frontline of broadcast journalism and the beginning of a career chapter centred on investment strategy and organisational growth.

.ke also highlighted how Linus Kaikai, Okwara's former boss at Citizen TV, reacted to her new job.

He had earlier expressed sadness over losing her from his newsroom team, explaining the significant impact she had made during her time at the station.

Evaleen Mitei among five shortlisted for TSC CEO job

Acting Teachers Service Commission (TSC) chief executive officer Evaleen Mitei is among five candidates shortlisted for the position of substantive secretary and CEO of the teachers' employer.

The commission readvertised the position on September 29, 2026, following a High Court decision that nullified the recruitment process initiated on May 6, 2025, over procedural breaches.

In its ruling delivered on September 17, 2026, a two-judge bench comprising Justices Dorah Chepkwony and Francis Nyungu of the Kiambu High Court ordered the commission to restart the recruitment process.

The judges found that the initial advertisement gave applicants only 13 days to submit their applications, against the minimum 14 days stipulated in the TSC Human Resource Policies and Procedures Manual.

The court also faulted the commission for failing to disclose the proposed remuneration for the position in the advertisement and consequently quashed the entire recruitment process.

However, the judges upheld the constitutionality of Section 16(2)(b) and (c) of the TSC Act, which requires applicants to hold a degree in education and have at least 10 years of relevant experience, including five years in senior management.

Following the fresh advertisement, which closed on October 30, 2026, the commission received 124 applications.

Among the requirements were Kenyan citizenship, a degree in education from a recognised institution in Kenya, compliance with Chapter Six of the Constitution and at least 10 years' experience in education, administration and management, human resource management or financial management.

The five shortlisted candidates are scheduled to appear before the selection panel on Monday, November 16, 2026, at the commission's headquarters in Upper Hill, Nairobi.

Cheptumo Ayabei from Baringo county will be the first to appear at 9am, followed by Mitei, who hails from Uasin Gishu county, at 10am.

Robert Odette from Migori county is scheduled for 11am, followed by Lawrence Kaburu from Tharaka Nithi county at noon.

Farah Abdi Saman from Mandera county will be the last candidate to be interviewed, at 1pm.

The candidates have been directed to present original copies of their national identity cards, academic and professional certificates and transcripts.

They must also provide valid clearance documents from the Kenya Revenue Authority, Higher Education Loans Board, a registered Credit Reference Bureau and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.

Applicants with degrees from foreign universities are required to submit recognition letters from the Commission for University Education.

Other requirements include a printed acknowledgement of the online self-declaration application or a self-declaration form duly stamped by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, recommendations from relevant professional bodies and associations, where applicable, and any other supporting documents and testimonials.

"Candidates should be at the venue at least 30 minutes before the indicated interview time," the commission said in its notice.

The TSC has also invited members of the public to submit credible information about any of the shortlisted candidates through sworn affidavits addressed to the commission chairperson.

The submissions should be delivered to the TSC headquarters, third floor, or sent by email to , to reach the commission by November 13, 2026.

"Take note that Teachers Service Commission may interview any member of the public who has submitted information on any shortlisted candidates and such information shall be confidential," TSC chairperson Jamleck Muturi said.

He added that the commission was an equal opportunity employer committed to selecting candidates on merit through fair and open competition from the widest pool of eligible applicants.

The conclusion of the recruitment process will end a prolonged vacancy at the helm of the commission, with the position having remained under an acting office-holder since the exit of Nancy Macharia on June 1, 2025.

Nacada arrests one, nets drugs haul in Mwala, Machakos county

A suspected drug trafficker has been arrested and a substantial haul of suspected narcotics seized in an intelligence-led operation by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Nacada) in Mwala subcounty, Machakos county.

The operation was conducted in the early hours of Tuesday at a homestead in Mbiuni, where officers raided premises belonging to a 31-year-old male suspect following intelligence reports.

Nacada said a thorough search of the homestead led to the discovery of several quantities of dry plant material suspected to be cannabis, alongside hundreds of small rolls containing substances believed to be narcotic drugs.

Among the exhibits recovered were 85 brooms of dry plant material suspected to be bhang and 700 small brownish rolls containing suspected narcotics.

"Specifically, the team confiscated 300 small brownish rolls and another 400 similar rolls containing the suspected narcotics," Nacada said in a statement.

Officers also recovered 16 nylon papers containing dry plant material, 73 white Top Whistler papers and 44 brown Whistler papers, as well as a pair of scissors.

The Whistler papers are suspected to have been used as packaging materials.

The suspect was arrested at the scene, while all the recovered exhibits were seized and secured in safe custody.

He was subsequently escorted to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) police station for further processing as investigations into the suspected drug trafficking activities continue.

Speaking after the operation, Nacada chief executive officer Anthony Omerikwa commended the officers for their vigilance and swift action, reaffirming the authority's commitment to dismantling drug distribution networks across the country.

He said the operation demonstrated the importance of intelligence sharing and cooperation among security agencies in tackling drug trafficking.

"This operation demonstrates the effectiveness of collaborative intelligence and the unwavering resolve of the multi-agency security team to rid our communities of harmful substances," he said.

Omerikwa warned that the authority would sustain its crackdown on drug traffickers, urging communities to support efforts to identify and disrupt illicit drug networks.

"We are sending a clear message that there is no safe haven for drug peddlers in Kenya. Nacada will continue to work closely with the community to ensure that those who seek to profit from the destruction of our youth face the full force of the law," he said.

The suspect is expected to remain in custody as Nacada and police officers conclude investigations ahead of his arraignment in court.

Interleaving, or interleaved practice, is a study strategy in which students alternate between different but related topics, concepts or types of problems during a single study session. They do that instead of practising one topic continuously, as in blocked practice. The interleaving strategy discourages students from studying a single topic repeatedly before moving to another one.
