BURNT FOREST, Kenya — A teacher has said she has narrowly escaped death after travelling to Nairobi ahead of colleagues bound for the same wedding.

The teacher, identified only as Josie, has told a childhood friend that she has chosen to leave early so she has time to meet friends, having agreed with colleagues to join them at the venue.

The friend has said Josie's voice has trembled throughout the call, as though she has been trying to convince herself that she has survived.

Separately, police have confirmed that a Nairobi-bound matatu carrying teachers to a wedding has collided with a lorry near Burnt Forest in the early hours of Saturday.

The lorry has been carrying cement and gravel towards Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Wilberforce Sichirani has said.

At least five people have died, among them four teachers and a learner from Matete Sub-County in Kakamega County, according to media reports.

One victim, Janet Andabwa, an acting headteacher, has left home at about 8pm after completing national junior school exam supervision, her husband has said.

It has not been independently established whether the vehicle has carried Josie's colleagues.

Josie has remained safe, and her friend has said she has prayed for the families who have lost loved ones.

Inspector Ngigi Ngugi, deputy base commander at Tarakwa Traffic Base, has shown journalists the wreckage of the matatu.

The friend has described the escape as nothing short of a miracle.
