The CS's decision to pursue further education comes against the backdrop of persistent questions about his academic history, which have followed him since his days as Kisauni Member of Parliament and later as Mombasa Governor.
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and various intelligence agencies have at different points investigated claims that his academic certificates were manipulated or forged.

The National Council for Higher Education in Uganda (NCHE) once declared that a degree he held from Kampala University was invalid. Joho consistently denied the allegations, maintaining that he obtained his qualifications through legitimate academic channels.
Courts dismissed cases that sought to challenge the validity of his degrees, and Joho has long defended his academic journey, arguing that he followed the proper steps at every stage.
Resilience and Late Education
Throughout the controversy, Joho has framed his academic path as one shaped by hardship rather than dishonesty. He has pointed to poverty and early financial responsibilities as the reasons behind his delayed pursuit of formal education, describing his trajectory as a story of perseverance.
His enrolment at the Technical University of Mombasa marks a fresh chapter in that journey, with the Cabinet Secretary now attending classes as a postgraduate student while holding one of the country's senior government positions.
