A political development in the Mt Kenya region has attracted attention as parties continue positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election. The latest move involves a familiar face in Kenya's broadcasting industry who has decided to pursue her political ambitions under a different party.

Former Inooro FM presenter Evelyn Waithira Muithirania has officially left the Jubilee Party and joined the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Gachagua announced her defection on Wednesday, November 4, after welcoming her to his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County. He said Waithira had expressed interest in contesting for the Murang'a County Woman Representative position on a DCP ticket.

Waithira is not new to the political contest for the seat. She participated in the 2022 General Election under the Jubilee Party ticket and finished second behind United Democratic Alliance candidate Betty Maina, securing more than 100,000 votes.

Her entry into DCP gives her another opportunity to pursue the countywide parliamentary position, although she will first have to secure the party's nomination.

Gachagua assured her that DCP would conduct free and fair nominations. He also encouraged her to begin mobilising supporters and participating in the party's membership registration exercise ahead of the primaries scheduled for March 2027.

Waithira previously built her public profile through broadcasting, particularly her work at Inooro FM, where she became known for programmes focusing on farming and community issues. She earned the nickname Baruthi wa Urimi because of her agricultural advocacy.

Her defection comes as DCP continues attracting political aspirants seeking elective positions ahead of the next general election. The party's nominations will determine whether she secures its ticket to contest the Murang'a seat.
