The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested a man accused of posing as a police officer to extort unsuspecting members of the public along Jogoo Road in Nairobi.
The person of interest has been arrested by officers from Jogoo Road Police Station at DC Stage following a tip-off from members of the public.
In a statement shared on X on Thursday, November 5, 2026, the DCI said the arrest followed reports of a suspicious individual allegedly demanding money from members of the public while masquerading as a law enforcement officer.
“A tip-off from members of the public has ended an impersonation and extortion scheme on Jogoo Road, Nairobi, with police arresting a man posing as a police officer before his deception could continue,” the agency stated.
According to detectives, the suspect identified himself as Sergeant Augustine Mjomba Mwadime and claimed to be attached to the General Service Unit (GSU) Training School in Embakasi.
However, his claimed police identity came under scrutiny when officers confronted him and examined the credentials he was using.
The DCI said a search exposed what investigators described as an attempt to give his alleged false identity the appearance of official authority.
“When confronted, the suspect introduced himself as Sergeant … claiming to be attached to the GSU Training School in Embakasi,” the statement read.
Officers reportedly recovered a forged certificate of appointment bearing a fake service number, alongside a pair of handcuffs and two keys.
“Recovered from him was a forged certificate of appointment bearing a fake service number, alongside a pair of handcuffs and two keys, an assortment of props intended to make his impersonation more convincing,” the DCI said.
The agency said information from members of the public enabled officers to act against the alleged impersonation scheme before it could continue.
The suspect was taken into custody and was undergoing police processing pending arraignment in court.
The arrest highlights the risk of individuals exploiting the authority associated with police ranks and identification documents to deceive members of the public.
The agency’s statement also underscored the role of public information in helping police identify suspicious activity and intervene before alleged offences continue.
