A woman whose family once faced the possibility of deportation from the United States has now secured another political victory in Minnesota.
Her victory comes after an extraordinary journey that saw her move from Kisii, Kenya, to become an elected representative in the United States.
Unlike many political success stories, Momanyi's journey began with an immigration struggle that nearly forced her family out of America.
Born in 1985 in Kisii, she spent her early childhood in Kenya before joining her parents in the United States in 1995.
Her father had moved to America in 1988 as a student, while her mother relocated there in 1992.
The family later encountered difficulties securing permanent residency, putting their future in the country at risk.
In one particularly difficult moment, they reportedly had just 48 hours before facing deportation.
Their circumstances changed after a senator intervened, helping the family avoid removal and continue their lives in America.
Momanyi went on to build her education and professional career in Minnesota, where she has lived for more than 30 years.
She attended Cooper High School before joining Bethel University, where she earned three bachelor's degrees and an MBA.
She subsequently established herself in the corporate sector, specialising in data privacy and data protection.
Her interest in public leadership eventually took her into electoral politics, although her first attempt did not produce the results she wanted.
In 2022, she contested the Democratic Party primaries for a Minnesota Senate seat but failed to secure the nomination.
The victory placed her in history as the first Kenyan American to win a state assembly seat in Minnesota.
Two years later, she has successfully defended the position, securing another term representing District 38A.
Her re-election means she will continue participating in legislative debates and representing residents of her constituency.
Her story has attracted attention because of the contrast between her family's immigration difficulties and her eventual position within American political leadership.
