The government is preparing to expand one of its programmes aimed at helping young graduates gain practical experience in the workplace. The proposed increase is expected to create more opportunities for graduates seeking exposure to public service operations.
Public Service Commission (PSC) Chairperson Francis Meja announced that the Public Service Internship Programme is expected to increase from the current 8,000 placements to 50,000 interns starting January 2027. He made the announcement on November 2 during a two-day capacity-building forum for state corporations and public universities at the Kenya School of Government in Mombasa.
During the meeting, Meja asked chief executive officers of state corporations and vice-chancellors of public universities to identify and declare available vacancies in their institutions. The information will help the Commission establish how many interns different agencies can accommodate under the expanded programme.
The PSC chairperson also urged the institutions to provide interns with meaningful work experience and professional guidance. He raised concerns about previous cases in which some interns were assigned duties such as running errands instead of being given responsibilities that could help develop their skills.
Meja said the programme was intended to prepare young people for the job market and that interns should be treated as professionals. He called on leaders of public institutions to support the programme by ensuring participants receive appropriate mentorship.
The expansion would increase the planned intake by 42,000 placements compared with the current level. It is part of the government's efforts to provide graduates with opportunities to gain practical experience in public institutions.
The Commission is expected to engage ministries and state agencies to obtain information on vacancies and staffing needs ahead of the planned January 2027 expansion.
