The National Police Service (NPS) confirmed on Tuesday, November 3, that a multi-agency rescue team retrieved the body of a woman from the site, raising the number of confirmed fatalities to two.
Police also reported that four people had been rescued alive since the building collapsed. Emergency responders are continuing to remove debris to establish whether additional victims remain trapped.
In a statement, the NPS expressed condolences to the family and friends of the deceased while wishing those injured a speedy recovery. The Service also appealed to members of the public to stay away from the affected area to give rescue personnel and specialised equipment sufficient room to operate.
The latest recovery comes 11 days after the multi-storey building under construction collapsed along 9th Street in Eastleigh on October 23, trapping workers and other people believed to have been inside.
The first body, also belonging to a woman, was recovered on Friday, October 30, eight days after the incident.
The rescue operation has been complicated by tonnes of concrete and debris blocking access to some sections of the structure, particularly the basement, where additional victims are suspected to be trapped.
By November 1, approximately 85 per cent of the debris had been cleared. However, 16 people remained unaccounted for following a verification exercise conducted by the Kenya Red Cross and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Nairobi North County Commissioner Simon Osumba previously disclosed that investigators had used mobile phone data to establish that nine of the missing individuals were at the building shortly before it collapsed.
Meanwhile, the disaster has prompted investigations into possible violations of construction regulations and failures in building supervision.
The Director of Public Prosecutions has directed the DCI to investigate possible negligence or misconduct involving government officials, developers and construction professionals connected to the project.
Investigators are expected to establish whether the building had obtained the necessary approvals and complied with construction safety standards.
The National Police Service says the multi-agency team will continue the search and provide further updates as the operation progresses.
