Ruto pledges to sponsor 5 International Leadership University students annually for 10 years

President William Ruto has pledged to sponsor five students at International Leadership University (ILU) every year for the next 10 years, offering a personal commitment that could support 50 students through higher education.

“For the next, God willing, 10 years, I will sponsor five students. Five students every year,” the president said.

The commitment would cover five students annually over a decade, although the specific courses and selection arrangements are yet to be agreed upon.

Ruto said he would consult the university’s Vice-Chancellor on the programmes that would benefit from the sponsorship, with the courses expected to reflect the institution’s values and priorities.

“I will discuss with the Vice-Chancellor what that means and which courses we will agree on, which courses to sponsor that are relevant to what the university thinks are the core values of the university,” he said.

The President explained that the offer was based on his personal history with Life Ministry and his belief that the organisation deserved his support.

He emphasised that the university’s team had not approached him to make the commitment, describing it as an offer arising from his existing relationship with the institution’s sponsor.

“The team has not asked me for what I am saying, so there’s an offer I am making because I have a history with the sponsor of this institution, and I know that it is worthy of my support and partnership,” Ruto said.

The pledge adds a personal sponsorship commitment to the charter award ceremony, which formally recognised ILU within Kenya’s university system.

Those details are expected to be discussed with the Vice-Chancellor, including the courses to be supported.

If implemented throughout the proposed 10-year period, the commitment would benefit 50 students, with five sponsorship opportunities offered each year.
