Chief Inspector Vitalis Kibet has linked missing Nairobi lawyer Abshir Abdi to an alleged extortion ring.

Kibet told the court that an intelligence report had also named the lawyer in a suspected bribery network.

His testimony brought new details into the ongoing court proceedings concerning Abdi’s disappearance.

Abdi went missing on November 1, 2026, after armed men allegedly seized him along Muchai Road, off Ngong Road, in Nairobi.

His disappearance prompted his brother, Zakaria Abshir, to move to the Milimani High Court seeking information about his whereabouts.

The family wants security agencies to disclose whether Abdi is being held in any of their custody facilities.

Court documents indicate that Abdi’s white Toyota Premio was later found abandoned along Muchai Road.

The vehicle was subsequently taken to Kilimani Police Station as investigations into the disappearance continued.

The court proceedings also brought attention to a criminal case at the Makadara Law Courts in which Abdi was listed as a witness.

The case, Republic versus Ahmed Ali Mohamed, was registered as MCCR/E2910/2025.

According to the court application, Abdi had previously received threats from people suspected of being linked to security agencies.

His brother claimed that the lawyer had been warned to withdraw from the case or face abduction and death.

Kibet, an officer attached to the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit in Nairobi, also reportedly testified about Abdi’s previous arrest.

According to the testimony, Abdi had faced allegations of kidnapping and fraud but was not charged.

The claims linking him to an extortion ring and bribery network were contained in an intelligence report presented during the proceedings.

They remain allegations and have not been established as facts.

On Wednesday, November 4, the High Court ordered security chiefs to produce Abdi before it at 2:30 pm, whether alive or dead.

Justice Alexander Muteti also directed the respondents to produce any warrants authorising Abdi’s arrest or detention.

Meanwhile, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations said it had formed a team to investigate the lawyer’s disappearance.

The agency also denied police involvement in the incident.

Abdi’s whereabouts remained unknown as the court proceedings continued.
