Kisii County Police Commander Ronald Kirui confirmed the recovery after a thorough search of the premises. “We conducted a serious search in the school and have recovered the firearm. The circumstances surrounding its loss are under investigation,” he said.
Anti-riot police were deployed to restore order. The school was subsequently closed and all students sent home. Some KNEC officials and officers sustained injuries during the attack.
The institution has a history of unrest. It was shut earlier this year following violent protests over the appointment of a new principal that included stone-throwing and the burning of a dormitory.
The incident underscores ongoing challenges in securing national examinations amid heightened anti-cheating measures.
