Suneka Airstrip was initially developed in the early 1980s as a 900-metre gravel runway.

However, growing demand for reliable transport infrastructure has prompted the government to undertake a major modernisation programme.

The upgrade follows a groundbreaking ceremony presided over by President William Ruto in April 2026.

According to the project details, the facility will receive a 1,050-metre asphalt runway alongside expanded taxiways and turn pads to improve aircraft movement.

Other planned developments include an aircraft parking apron, a passenger lounge, an administration block and improved drainage systems.

The project will also incorporate enhanced perimeter security to protect the aviation facility.

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) is overseeing the project, which is expected to make air travel more accessible to residents and businesses in the region.

The department's involvement is intended to help ensure that aviation facilities operate in a safe and secure environment.

The Suneka project forms part of wider efforts to strengthen regional infrastructure and improve access to essential services.

Its completion is expected to give the Gusii region improved transport options and support economic activity across neighbouring areas.
