A 31-year-old man is being held at Lanet Police Station in Nakuru after security officers allegedly caught him sitting Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examinations on behalf of a registered candidate at a local secondary school.

The arrest, which came on Monday, adds to a string of incidents that have unsettled the administration of this year's national examinations, now in their third day, with more than one million candidates participating across the country.
Nakuru County Director of Education Victoria Mulili confirmed that the suspect had been in custody since the beginning of the week. The student he was allegedly impersonating has not been traced, though the two are understood to be acquainted.

Separately, a student from Kibabii University who was accused of distributing examination papers in Bungoma has been released on bond.
The irregularities are unfolding against an already sobering backdrop. Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, who was in Kibra, Nairobi, overseeing the opening of examination containers, confirmed that three candidates have lost their lives since the examinations commenced.
Among those who died was Cornelius Kiplagat Trothi, a student at Katebe Secondary School in Tarbo Sub-County, Uasin Gishu County.
He passed away at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital on Tuesday, hours after sitting his Mathematics paper that morning.

CS Ogamba also raised the alarm over candidates who have failed to report for their papers. In Nairobi alone, he noted that approximately 13 candidates were unaccounted for as of Tuesday.
The Ministry of Education had previously assured the public that sufficient measures were in place to guarantee the integrity and smooth running of the 2024 national examinations.
