Former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Chief Justice Martha Koome and several prominent political and judicial figures gathered at Kariokor Crematorium in Nairobi on Wednesday, November 4, to pay their last respects to former Attorney General Paul Kihara Kariuki.

Kihara died on Tuesday, November 3, aged 72. His family said he would be cremated in accordance with his personal wishes.

Among those who attended the ceremony were former Chief Justices Willy Mutunga and David Maraga, former Attorneys General Githu Muigai, Amos Wako and Justin Muturi, as well as Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

Kenyatta, who appointed Kihara Attorney General in 2018, was among the prominent mourners. Koome also attended the ceremony, following tributes from the Judiciary after his death was announced.

President William Ruto also mourned the former Attorney General, describing him as an accomplished jurist and dedicated public servant.

Born on May 11, 1954, in Kiambu County, Kihara built a distinguished career in the legal profession. He began practising at Hamilton, Harrison and Mathews before co-founding the law firm Ndungu Njoroge and Kwach Advocates in 1986.

He later served as director of the Kenya School of Law before joining the High Court as a judge in October 2003. In 2009, he became the founding director of the Judiciary Training Institute.

In 2012, he was appointed to the Court of Appeal and became its president in 2013.

In April 2018, Kenyatta appointed him Kenya's seventh Attorney General, succeeding Githu Muigai. During his tenure, Kihara represented the government's legal interests in several major matters, including the Building Bridges Initiative.

He served until October 2022, when Justin Muturi succeeded him.

Kihara's cremation followed his family's decision to honour his personal wishes.
