Ruto Suffers Fresh Mt Kenya Setback as Governor Kimani Wamatangi Rules Out UDA Ticket Ahead of 2027.

Wamatangi made the announcement during a recent engagement in Kiambu, signalling a major shift in his political plans as the country moves closer to the next general election.

The governor, who was elected in 2022 on a UDA ticket, said he would reveal the political party he intends to use in December.

He also indicated that he was concentrating on completing pending development projects before engaging in early campaigns.

His announcement comes amid growing political realignments in the Mt Kenya region, where several leaders who previously supported Ruto have distanced themselves from the ruling party.

Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata and Nyandarua Governor Kiarie Badilisha have already joined former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).

Other leaders, including Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro and Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba, have similarly moved away from the ruling party.

Wamatangi's decision is particularly significant because Kiambu is among the politically influential counties in the Mt Kenya region, which played a major role in Ruto's victory in the 2022 presidential election.

The governor has previously complained about political challenges and alleged persecution, including investigations involving his county government. He has maintained that such developments have affected his political relationship with the national administration.

Although Wamatangi has ruled out the UDA ticket, he has not publicly confirmed joining DCP or any other political party.

His next move is expected to attract attention as rival political formations seek to strengthen their influence in Mt Kenya ahead of the 2027 elections.
