President William Ruto is facing growing political pressure within his United Democratic Alliance (UDA) as competing ambitions, regional rivalries and demands from coalition partners threaten to complicate his re-election plans ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Although Ruto has brought together several political parties under the broad-based government, maintaining unity within his original political camp is emerging as a major challenge.
Some UDA leaders are increasingly concerned that their influence could diminish as politicians who previously opposed the president secure positions and political influence.
According to the People Daily, the president is grappling with several challenges, including efforts to regain support in the vote-rich Mt Kenya region, growing competition for the Deputy President's position and dissatisfaction among some of his longtime political allies.
The fallout between Ruto and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has significantly altered the political landscape in Mt Kenya.
Gachagua has since established the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) and intensified his efforts to rally regional leaders against the president.
Although Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has taken a central role in Ruto's efforts to rebuild support in the region, the position has attracted interest from several other politicians.
However, the competition is not limited to UDA. Several Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) politicians have also demanded that their party be allowed to nominate Ruto's running mate in 2027.
Among those mentioned for the position are Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho and MSMEs Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya.
The demands have also extended to the proposed sharing of government positions, with some ODM leaders advocating for a 50-50 arrangement between the two political parties.
Ruto has publicly urged leaders from both sides to avoid internal disagreements, warning that divisions could weaken their political partnership.
Meanwhile, the president faces another challenge from disgruntled UDA members who are reconsidering their political future ahead of the next election.
The developments leave Ruto with the difficult task of protecting his party's political interests while accommodating new allies without alienating the politicians who helped him secure power in 2022.
