President William Ruto is expected to unveil 50 Principal Secretaries to head various state departments after he received a list of 250 shortlisted candidates from the Public Service Commission (PSC).

Though it is not yet known when he will make the announcement, His Excellency the deputy president Rigathi Gachagua has in the past revealed that the people who will be given the first priority will be their loyalists.

The former Mathira constituency Member of Parliament has since promised that those who supported them will be rewarded when an opportunity comes and this could have been why most of the Kenya Kwanza politicians applied for the principal secretary positions.

“Those who planted first are the ones who are going to harvest first then those who came in later. You all know the people who stood with us as we moved around the country in search of votes, we will not let them down when there is an opportunity,” said Mr Gachagua.

Politicians on the list are former Nairobi Deputy Governor Jonathan Mueke, former Embu County Assembly Speaker Justus Kariuki Mate, and former MPs Chris Wamalwa (Kiminini), Ahmed Kolosh Mohamed (Wajir West), Sylvanus Maritim (Ainamoi), Tokei Nyitore Loten (Baringo North), Vincent M’Maitsi (Hamisi) and Michael Kingi (Magarini).

Article 155 of the Constitution tasks the President with nominating a person for appointment as PS from among persons recommended by the Public Service Commission. The names of the nominees will then be forwarded to the National Assembly for approval.

The current cohort of 44 Principal Secretaries exited office along with President Uhuru Kenyatta once Ruto was sworn in on Tuesday, September 13. Principal Secretaries serve as the accounting officers of various state departments.
