KENYA POLICE RELEASE A STATEMENT AHEAD OF SUPREME COURT RULING

The National Police Service (NPS) has reassured Kenyans of adequate security ahead of Monday’s Supreme Court ruling.

In a statement released on Saturday evening, acting Police Inspector General Noor Gabow said they have “taken all the necessary steps and measures to enhance security in all parts of the country, including all critical infrastructure.”

“The public should not therefore panic and migrate from their homes or ordinary places of residence in fear and anticipation of chaos,” he adds.

Nullify, Uphold?
The Court is expected to either nullify or uphold the election of Dr. William Ruto as the fifth President of Kenya. His victory as announced by Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission chairman Wafula Chebukati on August 15, 2022, was challenged by his main competitor Raila Odinga of Azimio La Umoja coalition.

Whichever way the Court rules has the potential to stir reaction from supporters of either political faction.

“We as the National Police Service are alive to the anxiety and tensions this day portends to majority of Kenyans,” acknowledges Gabow. “We therefore take this opportunity to appeal to Kenyans to remain calm and peaceful. We further assure all Kenyans and the general public of their enhanced personal security and that of their property including loved ones.”

The police boss further appealed to the public to report any activities likely to upset peace to the toll-free numbers 911, 112, 999, and 0800 722 203.

Out of Bounds
The Supreme Court was holding the hearings at Milimani. It is expected to deliver the ruling at the same venue, which police have declared out of bounds.

“We wish to advice the general public to avoid gathering at the Supreme Court during the ruling, or congregating in public gatherings, but follow the proceedings from the comfort of their homes,” said Gabow.

“Access to the Supreme Court shall be limited to the public, and all roads leading to the court premises shall remain closed. Traffic police officers shall be deployed adequately to direct traffic around the Court facility.”

On Saturday, NPS announced that it had deployed additional security officers across the country ahead of the ruling.
