RAILA ODINGA EXPLAINS HIS ELECTION PLAN WHILE IN LONDON

Raila Odinga, the Azimio La Umoja presidential candidate, has now stated that he is committed to ensuring that the electioneering period does not disrupt Kenya’s ongoing economic recovery efforts.

Odinga who is currently touring the United Kingdom, said that Kenya must seize the opportunity for economic renaissance in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We need to rebuild back better and ensure that the electioneering period does not disrupt the ongoing efforts to revive the economy,” the ODM leader said.

Raila, who was in the House of Commons with Ms Theo Clerk, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s trade envoy to Kenya, said Kenya will work hard to strengthen strategic partnerships with friendly countries around the world, with the United Kingdom being one of the key planks.

The meeting was also attended by 10 members from both Houses of Parliament.

“Kenya and the UK have had a long-standing relationship, and being a member of the Commonwealth, there are opportunities to be harnessed in the trade and agricultural sectors as well as job creation,” Raila said.

The former Prime Minister promised that if elected, he will place a special emphasis on value addition and encouraged the UK to invest more in agricultural production in Kenya, rather than just importing raw materials.

Raila who is running for Kenya’s presidency for the fifth time, has promised that if elected, his government will invest in skill development and technical training to increase Kenya’s capacity to export labor.

“With the kind of resources and manpower Kenya prides itself in, we should be the gateway to the East African region on matters trade,” Raila said

“Currently, the UK has 1 million unfilled job opportunities and are looking for people to occupy them,”

The ODM leader kicked off a one-week tour of the UK on Sunday night. During the tour, he will hold key meetings and give addresses at the Commonwealth Secretariat and the Royal Institute of International Affairs, Chatham House.

He has been accompanied to the tour by among others, former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth, Governors Charity Ngilu and Hassan Joho as well as Suna East MP Junet Mohamed.
