PRESIDENT UHURU KENYATTA GIVEN MORE POWERS

President Uhuru Kenyatta will continue serving in his capacity as Jubilee Party leader following a resolution of the party’s Parliamentary Group (PG) meeting held at State House, Nairobi on Friday.

A statement issued by the party after the meeting indicated that the Jubilee Parliamentarians had agreed to partner with “like-minded individuals” who can further Kenyatta’s legacy agenda once his term expires.

“The Jubilee Party will seek to get into a coalition with like-minded parties and support a Presidential Candidate with whom we share common ideals, who will treat us with respect, and with whom we can form the next government as an ‘Anchor Partner’, to continue with the work done during the last 10 years,” reads part of the statement.

Jubilee will similarly now move to add more members to its ranks, rebrand and speed up party nominations in preparation for the August-slated polls.

The party’s post-election goal is to have a commanding influence at the Council of Governors, National Assembly and the Senate since it will not be tabling a presidential candidate this year.

The Jubilee PG meeting was a precursor to the party’s second National Delegates Conference (NDC) slated to take place on February 25 and 26 at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) from 10 am. The party last held an NDC in 2017, prior to the year’s elections.

According to Jubilee Secretary General Raphael Tuju, the NDC’s agenda will be to review the party’s policies and ratify proposed changes to the party’s constitution to comply with electoral laws. Jubilee members are also expected to approve the party’s new seal, symbol and flag.

President Kenyatta, is among other things, anticipated to disclose the reasons behind his decision to back Raila Odinga in the race to State House.

Experts also say that the NDC meeting will likely see Deputy President William Ruto stripped of his position as the party’s deputy leader.
