DARING THIEVES ATTACK A GSU CAMP

A group of over 50 thugs on Monday, August 30, attacked the Kamwenje GSU command located at the border of Laikipia and Baringo counties.

According to Laikipia County Commissioner Daniel Nyameti, armed bandits stormed the command centre and opened fire, shooting one officer.

The injured GSU officer was rushed to the Nakuru War Memorial Hospital and is recuperating from the non-fatal shooting.

No fatalities from the incident have so far been confirmed, with the motives of the bandits unknown.

Nyameti added that he would get a better understanding of the incident after receiving a detailed report from the area police commander. 

One of the officers who were present during the attack was quoted by Nation, revealing that the bandits shot indiscriminately at officers who had been camping outside.

“They raided the command centre at around 2 pm and started shooting indiscriminately at officers who were outside.”

“Afterwards, they went to another police post which is located several metres from the camp and started shooting in the air before they escaped to the neighbouring valley,” narrated the officer.

Such banditry attacks have been on the rise, with two GSU officers having been shot and injured after being ambushed by bandits in Loisaba Ranch, Laikipia North, as they were changing a car tyre.

In a separate incident, on August 2, a senior GSU Inspector was shot dead after being ambushed by armed bandits while on patrol duty at Laikipia Nature Conservancy, with four other police officers also killed at the same ranch two weeks later.

Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang’i, revealed last week, that the government would send a formation of three security forces to Laikipia County in order to flush out illegal herders and bandits from the County.
