MAN FORCED TO SPEND THE NIGHT AT A POLICE STATION WITH HIS DEAD WIFE.

A man who hails from Meru and who was forced by police officers to spend the night with the corpse of his wife inside a police station is set to win big.

This is after a court in Meru rules that Charles Mwenda should be awarded ksh1.5 million in compensation for the incident.

So bad was the experience that he was even rained on and the coffin was soaked with water.

The case was also enjoined by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), Kenya National Human Rights Commission (KNHRC) and the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).

The victim had sued the Meru County Coronavirus surveillance and the State for infringing on his rights and freedom after the police and county officials forced him to spend the night with the body of his wife inside the station.

Judge Edward Murithi in his ruling directed Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai to bear the cost.

Mwenda told the court that he was mistreated yet he had complied with the Covid-19 regulations.

The victim and a group of over 30 mourners had in May 2020 travelled all the way from Malindi in Kilifi County with the body after the death of his wife.

In his argument, he said that he had been allowed to take the body of his wife only identified as Faith to Meru where she was to be buried.

He said that they were nabbed by police officers in Keeria market and ordered to go back to Malindi or else they will be taken into quarantine.

After an altercation with the officers, Mwenda was bundled into a waiting police car and taken to Kanjai Police station.

Before moving to court well-wishers contributed over 750,000 for the man to take care of his family following the incident that attracted condemnation across the country.

It is to this effect that the Law Society of Kenya said that it will present him in court.
