NEW DETAILS ON PRESIDENT MUSEVENI’S HEALTH.

A Ugandan media denied refuted its own tweet yesterday to the effect that President Yoweri Museveni had been airlifted to Germany in critical condition after suffering breathing complications associated with Covid-19.

In a tweet, NTV Uganda denied  Museveni had earlier been airlifted to Nairobi for treatment. The channel claimed to be quoting the President’s private doctor.

Interestingly, the channel was refuting the tweet despite it having been verified as its official handle.

“Fake News Alert: Please, disregard this fake news post being shared and attributed to NTV Uganda and treat it with the contempt it deserves. NTV Uganda has not shared any such information on any of its platforms. Beware of those using social media to spread.”

Efforts to contact the Ugandan embassy in Nairobi were not successful as no one answered phone calls.

Last Friday, Museveni reportedly promoted his first son, Muhoonzi Kainerugaba, as the commander of the Land Forces in the army.

Museveni also promoted his former Aide de Camp Wilson Mbadi to the rank of General and named him the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF).

Under his new role, Lt Gen Kainerugaba, who has been serving as the head of Special Forces Command  will superintend over all divisions and independent units of the military structure such as military police.

Uganda has been hit by  a spike in Covid-19 forcing Museveni to re-impose a strict lockdown that included the closure of schools and the suspension of inter-district travel.

The new measures include the closure of all educational institutions, some bans on travel, the shutdown of weekly open markets and the suspension of church services.

Uganda implemented one of Africa’s tightest lockdowns at the beginning of the pandemic more than a year ago, but it was gradually lifted as cases slowed to a trickle.

Last month however, infections started to spike and new cases, particularly among younger people have surged, fueling fears that the country could slip into an out-of-control second wave.
