UHURU AND RUTO TO FORM NEW COALITION

Politicians from three factions aligned with President Uhuru Kenyatta, his deputy William Ruto and National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi will meet on Saturday, June 12 to chart the way forward for Mt Kenya region.

The three camps have been fighting to lead the divisive region with a number of politicians stepping forward to succeed Uhuru as kingpin.

Trade CS Peter Munya disclosed that the meeting will take place at Lusoi Lodge in Nyeri. The leaders are drawn from the Gikuyu Embu and Meru Association (GEMA), the three dominant communities in the region.

“I was invited and we will discuss the way forward for Mt Kenya,” Munya told Nation.

10 governors from the region are expected to grace the event, notably Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga), Lee Kinyanjui (Nakuru), James Nyoro (Kiambu) and Mwangi wa Iria (Murang’a). wa Iria and Waiguru spoke openly against the coronation of Speaker Muturi, one major issue that will dominate the discussions.

Muturi was backed by Uhuru’s cousin Kung’u Muigai as the voice of the head of state. “Muturi will be the supreme leader and will speak to the entire region on behalf of the president,” Muigai, an elder announced.

wa Iria declined to comment on the coronation matter and instead watered down the occasion stating that it was a normal meeting whereby they usually meet to iron out common issues.

Settling on one leader to succeed Uhuru will prove a tedious task for the region, especially with DP Ruto having made inroads in the area and consolidated support for his 2022 bid.

Former Kiambu Governor, William Kabogo will also join the leaders who will speak on how to chose Uhuru’s successor, a mass drive of voter registration in the area, and business partnerships among the counties.

A number of the DP’s allies, however, rejected invites to the meeting arguing that it will not serve the intended purpose.

“Those working with the DP have created a framework and blueprint of our coming years and political agenda aimed at empowering residents if he is elected President in 2022,” Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua insisted on developing Ruto’s bottom-up approach.
