MINISTER ESCAPES ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT TODAY MORNING, HIS DAUGHTER SHOT DEAD

A Ugandan government minister Katumba Wamala on Tuesday morning became a target of an assassination attempt after gunmen sprayed bullets at the vehicle carrying him.

Katumba, who is the Minister of Works and Transport narrowly escaped with gunshot injuries but unfortunately, his daughter identified as Brenda Nantongo and his driver Haruna Kayondo died on the spot.

The minister, who is a former army commander, survived with gunshot wounds in the chest.

His bodyguard who was also on board the vehicle survived.

According to eyewitnesses, four armed assailants riding on two black motorbikes shot at his vehicle.

The incident happened in the Kampala suburb of Kisaasi around 9 am.

Army spokeswoman Brigadier Flavia has confirmed the incident.

“There was a shooting involving him … he is hurt and he’s been taken to the hospital, his driver was killed,” she told Reuters.

Images going viral on social media shows gutted Katumba besides his car with blood spread on his white trouser.

Social media images also showed bullet holes on a car window and casings on the ground.

Katumba was rushed to Malcolm Clinic in Kisaasi where he is nursing injuries.

According to Independent Uganda, detectives have cordoned off the scene to search for any clues on the attack.
