Ruto Explains Why Raila Has Never Won Anything Since 2007

In his last campaign tour before suspending campaign rallies following the president’s directive, Ruto explained why Raila has not been able to win anything since 2007. In 2013 and 2017 he vied unsuccessfully for the presidency.

Speaking to a charged crowd in Busia, Ruto alluded that he has the Midas touch when it comes to politics. He is the modern day king maker. He claimed he was the sole reason Raila got his last government job as a Prime Minister.

As the crowd chanted his name and goading him to go further he asked, ‘Since I left him has he ever been able to win anything in this country?’ Ruto told the crowd he was almost jailed at the International Criminal Court in Hague because of his efforts to get Raila elected.

In 2007, Ruto was a member of what was infamously known as the Pentagon. Its members were Raila Odinga, Musalia Mudavadi, William Ruto, Joe Nyagah and Najib Balala. Later Charity Ngilu would join the team. Ruto did not acknowledge the collective effort played by Pentagon members in campaigning for Raila. According to him, it was through his grit and grunt that saw Raila almost succeed Kibaki as president.

According to the deputy president, Raila has worked with other politicians since 2007 and no one has gotten close to getting him elected. He termed Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetangula as useless for failing to help Raila Odinga.
