A bus in Indonesia, carrying school children as well as parents has plunged into a ravine, killing 27 people, the transportation ministry confirmed.

The driver of the bus is believed to have lost control shortly before crashing on Wednesday night, it has been reported.

Local police chief, Eko Prasetyo Robbyanto has said that the tragic accident occurred on a winding road while a group of high school students from Subang were making their way back from a school trip when the brakes of the bus are believed to have stopped working.

The bus had been returning to Subang after an excursion to the pilgrimage site in the Tasikmalaya area before it plunged down a 20-meter deep ravine.

Local reports suggest that 39 people had survived the incident that occurred on a road that is known for its sharp declines.

Rescue workers in the area had been working throughout the night using cranes to lift the survivors from the bus which had fallen onto its side during its fall.

Supriono, a local search and rescue agency official, said later evacuation efforts had been completed and survivors were taken to a nearby hospital.

Deden Ridwansah, agency chief of Bandung search and rescue said that thirteen survivors were being treated for serious injuries, before confirming that the driver had been killed.

A rescue agency said that the fatalities had been a mixture of children, as well as adults who were on board.

Relatives of those who had been travelling on the bus are believed to be waiting at nearby hospitals for updates on the conditions of all those involved.

In December 2019, 35 people died when a bus fell into an 80-meter deep ravine before plunging into a river on the Sumatra island, due to the road infrastructure in the area.
