POLICE RUIN CHRISTMAS FOR 147 NAIROBIANS.

At least 147 Nairobians were arrested on Friday night December 25, after they were found flouting Covid-19 rules and guidelines.

Police launched a high-level operation aimed at enforcing the 10 p.m to 4 a.m curfew with the suspects being picked up from different areas within the country’s capital.

The 147 were taken into custody at the Kasarani Stadium as police battle to enforce social distancing rules in the country’s biggest sporting arena.

The arrested suspects were picked up from various drinking dens, streets and house parties in different estates with Nairobi.

The 147 people are expected to be arraigned in court on Monday, December 28 with officers revealing that the suspects are likely to be released on police bond.

This comes days after the Moi International Sports Centre (Kasarani Stadium) was designated as a police station to hold the violators of Covid-19 regulations.

In a letter dated Thursday, December 24, the National Multi-Agency Command Centre on Covid 19 advised the public to remain vigilant and follow the guidelines laid by the Ministry of Health.

The Covid-19 rules include general public safety regulations, religious gatherings procedures, operations of public service vehicles, operation of restaurants and indoor meetings.

“Any person who breaches any or all of the above Covid-19 rules and the state curfew is liable to six months imprisonment or a fine not exceeding Ksh 20,000 or both.

“For the purpose of enforcement of these Covid-19 Rules, the public is further hereby notified that the Moi International Centre, Kasarani is designated as a police station for the purpose of holding violators of Covid-19 rules pending trial and conviction,” read the letter in part.

Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai on Tuesday noted that police officers are under instructions to ensure no one contravenes the existing Covid 19 protocols.

“Curfew time will be fully enforced; at 10 pm everyone should be indoors,” explained the IG.
