WAR BETWEEN ORENGO AND DP RUTO

Siaya Senator James Orengo has asked Deputy President William Ruto to stop lying to Kenyans about the possibility of a having a multi-choice referendum because it is unlawful.

Besides their clamour for a non-contested referendum, the DP and his allies also recommended the referendum to provide multiple choices instead of a simple Yes or No question.

However, speaking on Saturday, December 5, the lawyer said the Constitution only provides an elaborate process which culminates into a referendum vote and not a multiple-choice vote.

He also hit out at the DP for airing out his concerns on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) way late when the train had already left the station.

“We cannot have a multi-choice referendum there is not such provision in the current Kenyan law,” he said.

In counter Orengo’s claims, the second in command insisted having a multi-choice referendum was possible and also under the law.

“Our law, the Elections Act proposes that on issues like on the BBI case, we should have a multiple-question referendum. They should not be afraid of what the people will choose because this is their country and this is their Constitution,” he said on Sunday, December 6.

He argued the Constitution provides a democratic process and Kenyans should thus be allowed to make varied options as they feel right.

As reported by TUKO, Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka also disagreed with Ruto’s proposal to have the referendum alongside the 2022 General Elections.

“Some of our citizens are suggesting that we vote clause by clause as if we have had a referendum before. General practice has to happen and we will therefore vote Yes or No,” he said.

He said a multi-choice referendum will confuse Kenyans.
