KSh 1.9 Billion floating bridge in Mombasa

According to the implementing agents, the Ksh 1.9 billion bridge connecting Mombasa Island and South Coast will be complete by December this year.

The government is on a frantic effort to change Mombasa town transforming it to a modern city status. The floating bridge is expected to be the first step towards achieving that status.

Currently, the projects whose total cost is put at over Sh116.3 billion by government officials are on schedule. Most of the projects, will be complete in five years.

President Uhuru Kenyatta hailed the floating bridge saying that it will considerably ease the congestion in Likoni Ferry.

“The Likoni bridge between Liwatoni and Likoni will also help de-congest the ferries and ease pedestrian connection,” President Kenyatta told parliament.

The bridge, the first of its kind in East Africa will will comprise a 529m long floating section, and 54m long approaches on either side of the floating span.

The bridge is not aimed at phasing out the Likoni Ferry but rather complement it to help ease congestion in the crossing channel.

Meanwhile, Mombasa County has also set up recreation activities within the island with the rehabilitation of the old Railway roundabout almost complete.

The bridge designs are similar to Golden Gate Bridge connecting San Francisco, California and San Francisco Peninsula in the US.
