BAD NEWS TO RAILA FROM MERU

When Raila went into the infamous handshake with Uhuru Kenyatta, he and his supporters had two major expectations; be followed by Mt Kenya blindly and BBI be passed without opposition. It seems currently nothing is going according to script.

Vocal leaders from Mt Kenya like MPs Ndindi Nyoro, Kimani Ichung’wah, Alice Wahome and Moses Kuria have vehemently opposed Raila’s overtures in Mt Kenya. It would be naive to think that these politicians do not have considerable influence in Mt Kenya.

When BBI rallies started, many political analysts thought it will pass unopposed. The rallies were filled with multitudes. With each passing day, the BBI loses its popularity and appeal to Kenyans. With the Corona pandemic, Kenyans have had time to think about it, it’s no longer novel to them and voices of dissent are being hard from key players especially in Mt Kenya.

Yesterday Meru governor expressed his fears over BBI. He said it would be foolhardy to support a document he doesn’t know its contents. He categorically said he’s undecided whether to support it or oppose it. The statement from Kiraitu Murungi may be seen as normal casual remark but it’s deeper than that. Kiraitu Murungi is the key point man for Uhuru in Meru, he’s the one who founded the Jubilee Coalition. Many analysts are asking if the Meru Governor maybe speaking for someone higher above.

Kiraitu would go on to say that he will not rally his community to support the BBI. This is a big blow to Raila who wanted Mt Kenya votes in bulk. With Ruto’s popularity in Meru increasing every day, the future of BBI has never seemed so bleak.

“As of now, I am not supporting and I am not against BBI because I don’t know what is in it. If I see that it has benefits for the people of Meru, I will tell the people that it is good and we vote for it. If it is only meant to benefit others, we will reject it,” Mr Murungi said.

The governor was speaking during the burial of Francis Marete Mbogori, father of Weru TV CEO John Marete. During the burial ceremony, he said that the Meru community will be the first to scrutinize the BBI document one’s it’s made available.

Unlike Murathe, the Governor who has more influence than the former failed to endorse anyone for the top seat. “It is about our own interests. We are tired of preparing food, chewing it and only for others to swallow,” said Mr Murungi.

Linturi who’s political star is rising since being sacked by the president drummed support for Ruto. He said that the hustler debate is not about the poor or the rich but uplifting the ordinary Kenyans and improving their economic status. That Kiraitu Murungi did not say anything to the contrary speaks volumes.
