Raila to save Waiguru from Impeachment

When BBI became a means to an end, the war against corruption became selective. Raila has recently found himself between a rock and a hard place. He could choose to fight corruption allegedly perpetuated by his new found friends or he could turn a blind eye and in exchange get support for his new political baby: BBI.

Raila led a spirited campaign against Waiguru which saw her eventually resign from cabinet after she was accused of overseeing plunder in her ministry in which the country lost billions of shillings. Although she cited personal reasons while rendering her resignation, many people saw it as a way of deflecting the heat brought by the NYS scandal.

Waiguru would go on to win the Kirinyaga Gubernatorial seat with a landslide. When Raila and President Uhuru came together through the handshake, a trade in had to happen. Once political enemies, Waiguru became friends with Raila. The earlier corruption allegations levelled against him by Raila were dropped and in return Waiguru dropped the defamation suit against the former premier.

Raila has made a career fighting impunity and championing against democracy. His voice has always resonated with the voice of the masses. Will he seek the guidance of the masses in the case of Waiguru? If the masses ask for the guillotine, will Raila agree? The options are limited for Raila. To support Waiguru’s impeachment would make him lose a key ally in Mt Kenya. It would also dent the fragile relationship he has with most of Jubilee elected leaders. If Raila chooses to defend Waiguru, Kenyans would accuse him of abating corruption and not letting the Senate be impartial.

Waiguru knows her fate lies at the hands of Raila. If ODM Senators would vote against her, she will go home prematurely. The time is nigh to redeem her points for supporting BBI. The friendship between the two will be tested in the coming days. It won’t take a genius to guess what Raila will do, but the results of that decision will form a rich political discourse heading 2022 and could be a key factor on who becomes the 5th.
