How US Elections Inspired Sifuna and Linda Mwananchi to Target Kenya Kwanza Strongholds

Nairobi Senator and Linda Mwananchi party leader Hon Edwin Sifuna has cited recent political developments in the United States as an example of how voters can change established political power structures, expressing confidence in the Linda Mwananchi movement ahead of Kenya’s 2027 General Election.

Speaking in the Senate, Sifuna pointed to the performance of the US Democratic Party, saying the results showed that political strongholds could be challenged when voters demand accountability and better leadership.

He argued that the developments offered lessons for Kenya’s opposition, particularly the Linda Mwananchi movement, which is seeking to build grassroots support ahead of the next general election.

Sifuna expressed confidence that the movement could make political gains in regions traditionally associated with Kenya Kwanza administration, including Kericho, Nandi and Uasin Gishu.

He maintained that focusing on the concerns of ordinary citizens and strengthening grassroots mobilisation could help alternative political movements gain support across the country.

The proposed changes could affect Majority Chief Whip Moses Ogeto and nominated MCA Perpetua Mponjiwa Okello, who have openly associated themselves with Sifuna's emerging political movement despite holding positions under the ODM banner.

The planned shake-up is reportedly linked to their support for the Linda Mwananchi Movement, which has increasingly exposed divisions within ODM as rival factions battle for political influence ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Ogeto, who represents Kilimani Ward in Dagoretti North Constituency, currently serves as the Majority Chief Whip. He has represented the ward since 2013 and was previously considered a close ally of the late ODM founder Raila Odinga.

Mponjiwa, on the other hand, chairs the influential Education Committee, placing her among the key figures overseeing important county affairs.

Ogeto has acknowledged reports of the impending changes but questioned the reasons behind the move. He maintained that his decision to support Sifuna was informed by his belief that ODM had drifted away from the principles championed by its late founder.

He argued that the party had shifted its focus from defending ordinary citizens to protecting the interests of powerful politicians.

Despite the possibility of losing his influential position, Ogeto appeared unfazed, maintaining that his political future would ultimately be determined by voters.

He is also eyeing the Dagoretti North parliamentary seat currently held by Beatrice Elachi.

If the proposed changes are implemented, Upper Savannah MCA Stazo Omung'ala Elija Ang'ila, who serves as Ogeto's deputy, is expected to take over as Majority Chief Whip.

The developments highlight the growing political consequences of the divisions within ODM, with Sifuna's Linda Mwananchi Movement attracting leaders who have become increasingly critical of the party's current direction.

For the two Nairobi MCAs, their association with Sifuna could now come at a political cost, as the battle for influence within ODM threatens to strip them of some of their most powerful positions in the county assembly.

  • “Are You Ready?”: Winnie Odinga Teases Major Announcement Ahead of 2027 Nairobi Senate Bid

“Are You Ready?”: Winnie Odinga Teases Major Announcement Ahead of 2027 Nairobi Senate Bid

East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Winnie Odinga has sent shockwaves through Kenya’s political landscape after teasing a major upcoming announcement, further fueling intense speculation surrounding her strategy for the 2027 General Election.

In a short video shared across her social media platforms on Monday, November 2, 2026, the lawmaker dropped a subtle hint about her political future, asking her audience a direct question: “Are you ready?”

While Winnie stopped short of confirming which political party or coalition ticket she will run on, the strategic timing of the teaser has sparked widespread conversation among analysts and supporters alike about how she plans to navigate the post-Raila political era.

The video teaser comes shortly after Winnie engaged her fanbase directly through an interactive Instagram poll, asking followers to weigh in on her political direction and party alignment ahead of 2027.

The results of the poll delivered a clear signal, with the “Linda Mwananchi” option securing a commanding 72% of the total votes. The strong showing has sparked questions over whether she might align with the newly launched political movement or forge an independent path.

Winnie’s latest move comes just weeks after she officially declared her candidacy for the Nairobi County Senate seat in 2027. She first made her intentions public during an October 2026 memorial service honoring her late father, former Prime Minister and long-time opposition leader Raila Odinga.

By entering the Nairobi senatorial race, Winnie steps up to fill the void expected to be left by incumbent Senator Edwin Sifuna, who has signaled intentions to pursue higher office in the upcoming election cycle. As political realignments continue to take shape across the capital, Winnie’s upcoming announcement is expected to outline her formal campaign platform and organizational structure.

  • Gachagua Names Charity Ngilu Kenya’s ‘Iron Lady’ in Martha Karua Jab

Gachagua Names Charity Ngilu Kenya’s ‘Iron Lady’ in Martha Karua Jab

The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader revealed that their talks focused on key historical lessons drawn from the creation of the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC). NARC famously united opposition factions in 2002, bringing an end to KANU’s 24-year rule.

Taking an apparent indirect jab at Martha Karua  – traditionally dubbed the “Iron Lady” – Gachagua described Ngilu as the true “Iron Lady of Kenyan politics.” He credited her with shaping NARC’s winning strategy alongside former President Mwai Kibaki and the late Vice President Michael Kijana Wamalwa.

According to Gachagua, Ngilu offered valuable details on how key figures negotiated, structured, and mobilized the historic coalition.

He noted that Ngilu shared strategic insights that could prove vital as opposition forces work to challenge the ruling Kenya Kwanza administration in the upcoming election cycle. Beyond electoral strategy, the two leaders deliberated on mechanisms to combat corruption, curb impunity, and guide the nation toward economic growth.

“The lessons I have learnt will be very instrumental. I assure the Kenyan people that I am more knowledgeable and I can clearly see light at the end of the tunnel,” he said.

Drawing parallels between the current political landscape and the pre-2002 realignment, Gachagua pointed to how opposition parties joined forces behind Kibaki to defeat then-President Daniel Arap Moi’s backed candidate, Uhuru Kenyatta. He affirmed that opposition leaders are actively coordinating to select a single, formidable flag bearer for the 2027 contest.

“We have a 2002 moment, and our promise is that we shall identify one presidential candidate who will win by a landslide,” Gachagua said.

This sit-down with Ngilu forms part of a broader series of high-level engagements Gachagua has undertaken since returning from his United States tour on October 20. His recent itinerary includes consultations with Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) leader Kalonzo Musyoka and figures tied to the Linda Mwananchi Movement, headed by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.

These consultative meetings signal accelerating momentum among opposition outfits as they refine coalition structures, line up leadership agreements, and determine their strategy to field a single presidential candidate in 2027.
