George Russell's unaired radio message at Mexico City GP ahead of Kimi Antonelli's world title win speaks volumes

George Russell couldn't hide his anger over an unaired radio message during the Mexican Grand Prix after suffering a deployment issue.

While Mercedes were ecstatic after Kimi Antonelli won the 2026 F1 World Championship, it was another disappointing race for teammate Russell, who finished a disappointing sixth in Mexico.

The 28-year-old started second on the grid at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, but dropped to sixth instantly at the first corner after losing speed on the approach to Turn 1 and couldn't recover from there.

It materialised after the race that Russell suffered a deployment issue off the line in Mexico – similar to the problem he encountered in Belgium earlier this season – and that ultimately cost him ground after receiving a 10-second time penalty for crashing into Isack Hadjar at Turn 6 on the opening lap.

Unaired radio messages that cannot be reproduced due to broadcast rights restrictions have since emerged and revealed how Russell initially pressed Mercedes for answers before opting to keep quiet.

“Mate, what was..? What was that about?," Russell said to race engineer Marcus Dudley, on Lap 1.

The Briton then asked Mercedes to check his car for damage following a collision with Hadjar. “Check front-left. And front wing," he said before being heard complaining about his deployment issue at the start, with team principal Toto Wolff issuing an apology to his driver.

"Mate, how is this..? Impossible! No. Ah. I’m gonna shut the f**k up," Russell continued before Wolff responded: “Sorry, George, for that.”

After the race, a clip circulated on social media of Wolff consoling a tearful Russell, who released a statement on Mercedes behalf addressing what went wrong for him in Mexico and congratulating Antonelli on his title win.

"Firstly, congratulations to Kimi on a thoroughly deserved championship," a statement read. "He has done a fantastic job this season and can be incredibly proud of what he has achieved.

“Unfortunately, it was a very disappointing race on my side. I made a good start and was in a strong position, but then we suffered an issue which caused me to not have full deployment down the straight.

“That cost us a lot of positions and ultimately took us out of contention for a strong result. It’s frustrating to have the race compromised by something outside of my control but that is racing.

“We will reset after this weekend and look to come back stronger in Brazil. We still have a constructors’ championship to win and my full focus is on helping the team achieve that.”

On Monday (November 2), Russell reflected on a year that had begun with title ambitions but has since been marked by reliability issues and inconsistent performances.

The Mercedes star acknowledged that he has struggled to rediscover his best form – currently sitting fourth in the drivers' championship – 130 points behind Antonelli after winning three races all season.

"Now feels like a pretty suitable moment to speak from the heart," Russell wrote on Instagram ahead of the final four races of 2026.

"This season started off exactly how I had hoped but it very quickly unravelled with tough luck and poor performances. It’s been the first proper season of my career where I’ve had more bad days than good.

"Has it been tough to deal with? Yes, very. Has it been tough to pick myself up week in, week out? Yes, very. Confusion at times? Often. All I know is that I’ve given it my all and 2026 was not meant to be my year."

F1 returns to Brazil this weekend as the Sao Paulo Grand Prix takes centre stage from November 6-8.

Mikel Arteta once delivered a stark warning to Viktor Gyokeres as the Arsenal boss considers his options following the striker's disappointing start to the season. Despite the Gunners getting off to a flying start in their title defence, Gyokeres has found the net just once so far.

That solitary goal came in the embarrassing Carabao Cup exit at Fleetwood. As reported by Mirror Football, Arsenal have made recruiting a top-quality forward their primary objective in January.

Arteta has placed attacking reinforcements at the top of his agenda, viewing fresh firepower as essential to mounting a challenge across all competitions. That is a damning reflection on Gyokeres, putting his future at the Emirates firmly in question.

As a potential replacement, the Gunners are believed to have identified Bournemouth's Eli Junior Kroupi as a target, though the Cherries would be reluctant to let him go in the next transfer window. Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich have also been credited with an interest in the exciting Frenchman, 20.

Arsenal retain a long-standing interest in Juventus' Kenan Yildiz, while fresh uncertainty surrounds Vinicius Junior's long-term future at Real Madrid following the Gunners' summer pursuit of the Brazilian, though a winger remains a secondary priority behind securing a versatile forward.

All of which leaves Gyokeres glancing nervously over his shoulder with reminders of his first encounter with Arteta, who bluntly warned the Swede that he would need to weather goal droughts if he were to succeed at Arsenal.

Make sure you don't miss the best Arsenal coverage by making the Daily Mirror one of your Google preferred sources.

Following his stuttering start to last season, the Gunners boss said: "I told him before the first meeting, I said, 'The nine that I want is a nine that when he doesn't score for six or eight games, he can handle that.

"'If not, you have to go somewhere else because the expectation is going to be there.' So, if you put on a nine shirt for Arsenal, you have to be able to say, 'OK, six games, if I don't score, I'm a different player? I start to act in a different way?'

"No, I want much more of the same of what he's doing. You see the history of the number nines. You're going to have moments like this.

"He brings so much to the team. He creates space and solutions to a lot of the players around him. And with the talent that we have in the team, I'm sure that everybody, him included, will benefit from that."

Gyokeres stayed on the bench for most of Sunday's triumph at Liverpool before coming on as a late substitute for match-winner Kai Havertz. With fixtures coming thick and fast, he'll be eager to feature from the off in Wednesday's Champions League encounter away to Slavia Prague.

Max Dowman is eligible for selection as his three-game ban following his red card at Fleetwood is restricted to domestic games only. Arsenal's attempt to overturn the 16-year-old's sending-off was unsuccessful.

Man Utd set to face former academy goalkeeper who launched rap career after leaving Old Trafford

A former Manchester United academy graduate will return to Old Trafford on Tuesday night, more than a decade after playing alongside the likes of Jesse Lingard and Adnan Januzaj.

Pierluigi Gollini, who spent two years at United between 2012 and 2014, is expected to start for Roma when they come up against Michael Carrick's side in the Champions League.

The 31-year-old is currently Roma's second-choice goalkeeper, but with Mile Svilar still recovering from a broken finger, Gian Piero Gasperini will likely hand Gollini the gloves for Tuesday's game.

It will be a memorable evening for the Italian shot-stopper, who spent two years at United between 2012 and 2014 after joining the youth ranks from Fiorentina as a 17-year-old.

He played under Paul McGuinness at under-18 level before helping Warren Joyce’s side lift the under-21 Premier League title alongside Lingard, Januzaj and Tom Lawrence.

Gollini was offered a new deal but decided against taking up the offer. He joined Italian side Hellas Verona in the summer of 2014.

A few years later, Gollini explained his reasons behind leaving United. "I needed to grow and aim to become a first-choice goalkeeper one day," he told Vavel.

"In Manchester, they offered me another contract, but I thought it was better to return to Italy after three years, to a major club like Verona. I also think the Italian school of goalkeeping is superior."

The goalkeeper spent two years at Verona before returning to England with Aston Villa in 2016. He later joined Atalanta on loan for the 2017-18 season before making the move permanent.

Gollini went on to make over 100 appearances for Atalanta under Gian Piero Gasperini, the manager he currently works under at Roma, and even picked up an Italy cap in 2019.

He also enjoyed loan spells at Tottenham, Fiorentina, Napoli and Genoa between 2021 and 2015 before joining the ranks at the Stadio Olimpico.

“I obviously haven’t played much in recent years, but I see myself in training, my team-mates see me, so obviously football is a world that moves super fast,” Gollini said after last week's game against Cagliari.

“Maybe six months [ago] you don’t play much, you don’t do anything and it seems like you’re dead, right? You’re finished."

He added: “But when you work every day, you know what you’re doing and in any case, even if I haven’t played, I’ve always been in a team, in a high-level environment, with great players, so I’ve always known my value.”

Off the pitch, Pierluigi Gollini has become somewhat of a music sensation, performing under the stage name Gollorius.

Back in 2018, he released a rap single titled Rapper coi guanti (Rapper with Gloves) and donated all of the proceeds to help renovate a football pitch near his hometown.

"I did this because my personal story is the same as loads of children who want to play football, who dream of making it from the streets," he told the Champions Journal.

CS Mugaa urges young people to seek opportunities in sports amid unemployment concerns

Young people in Meru have been urged to use their talents to earn a living as concerns grow over unemployment and the limited opportunities available to many youths.

Water Cabinet Secretary Eric Mugaa said young people should explore their abilities beyond formal education and consider turning skills such as football into economic opportunities.

Mugaa spoke in Meru on Tuesday, October 3, 2026 after being named patron of Tulivu FC, saying talent development could help young people become financially independent.

“Youth are key to economic growth in this country. If they are empowered, guided and supported in the right way, they can play a great role in shaping the economy of the nation,” Mugaa said.

He said sports should not only be viewed as recreation but also as an avenue through which young people can develop skills, find employment and earn an income.

South Imenti Member of Parliament (MP) Shadrack Mwiti said organised activities could help keep young people occupied and reduce their exposure to alcoholism and drug abuse.

He called on political leaders, churches, charitable organisations and both levels of government to support initiatives that give young people productive opportunities.

“If leaders, charitable organisations, churches and the two arms of government support the youth, I believe this nation can greatly reduce alcoholism and drug abuse among our children because they will not be idle anymore,” Mwiti said.

The remarks come amid wider calls for practical opportunities to address youth unemployment. Meru has previously explored talent development through initiatives such as its county talent academy, while national leaders have also proposed [sports academies to identify and train young talent

Tulivu Limited director Francis Mworia said the company had donated Ksh3 million to support Tulivu FC’s operations.

The club is also planning to establish a sports academy to identify and train young footballers who could progress to its senior team.

Mugaa said the proposed academy would provide young players with an opportunity to develop their abilities through structured training.

Mworia said the club hopes to move from Division Two to the National Super League by 2030, a target that will require investment and continued player development.

The club’s plans form part of a wider effort to create more opportunities for young people interested in pursuing football.

  • FKF crisis deepens as Fifa blocks disputed NEC meeting

FKF crisis deepens as Fifa blocks disputed NEC meeting

The crisis at the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has taken a fresh turn after Fifa moved to block a controversial National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for November 4 at Nairobi’s Tamarind Hotel.

The meeting had been convened by a faction of NEC members led by FKF Vice President McDonald Mariga in a move that challenged the leadership of federation president Hussein Mohammed.

However, Fifa ruled that the proposed meeting did not comply with the requirements of the FKF Constitution, particularly Article 38, which outlines the procedures for convening and holding NEC meetings.

“Article 38 of the FKF Constitution governs the convening and holding of NEC meetings and sets out the relevant statutory requirements to be observed in this respect,” Fifa stated.

The world football governing body also questioned the validity of the request used to convene the meeting, noting that it had originally been submitted on May 26, 2026, several months before the November 4 meeting.

Fifa pointed out that FKF had subsequently held an NEC meeting on July 11 and issued notices for other meetings after the initial request was made.

“The documentation indicates that following that request, the FKF convened an NEC meeting held on 11 July 2026 and subsequently issued notices for further NEC meetings,” Fifa stated.

The position of the group led by Mariga was further weakened by the withdrawal of two members who had initially signed the request to convene the meeting.

“Moreover, two of the original signatories have formally withdrawn their support for the aforementioned request,” Fifa added.

Fifa observed that these developments meant that the May 26 request could no longer serve as a valid basis for convening the November 4 meeting.

“It would appear that the request of 26 May 2026 can no longer be relied upon as a valid procedural basis for convening the meeting of 4 November 2026,” the governing body stated.

Fifa also questioned whether the NEC members had satisfied the constitutional requirements allowing them to convene a meeting independently under Article 38.2.

“Consequently, the conditions under which NEC members may themselves convene a meeting pursuant to Article 38.2 do not appear to be fulfilled,” Fifa stated.

In its communication, Fifa urged FKF to call off the planned meeting, citing the need to uphold the federation’s constitution and protect the proper functioning of its statutory organs.

“In light of the foregoing and in order to ensure compliance with the FKF Constitution and safeguard the proper functioning of the Federation’s statutory bodies, we request that FKF refrain from holding the NEC meeting scheduled for 4 November 2026,” Fifa said.

The latest intervention comes amid growing divisions within FKF, raising fresh concerns about the stability of football administration in Kenya.

Attention now turns to the Special General Meeting scheduled for November 7 in Meru, where members are expected to deliberate on issues affecting the federation.

The meeting comes at a critical moment, with the leadership dispute threatening to deepen divisions and disrupt the administration of football in the country.

The football world is in mourning after the announcement that Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel has died after an on-field collision in a Spanish second division match.

De Miguel’s side were in a 2-2 draw with visiting Andorra on Monday at Tenerife’s Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez seven minutes into added time at the end of the La Liga 2 game.

The ball was cleared from the Tenerife penalty area and bounced towards midfield, where the 30-year-old, who had come on as a substitute in the 59th minute with his side leading 2-0, was challenged by Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono, whose knee appeared to strike Miguel in the chest.

The keeper was immediately shown a red card as players frantically waved medical staff onto the field to tend to the prone de Miguel.

The match was abandoned shortly afterwards with players in tears while Spanish media reported de Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest in an ambulance on the way to the Hospital Universitario de Nuestra Senora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit

A statement from his club on Tuesday morning read: “Broken with pain, with a lump in our throat and unable to believe that this is true, we communicate the tragic death of Jesus de Miguel Alameda.

“There are no words of comfort. There is absolutely nothing to mitigate this feeling full of sadness.

“We are with his devastated family, with his loved ones, with all the people of Tenerife who today mourn this cruel outcome.”

The statement said the player’s family was grateful for the outpouring of support and requested privacy “in these terrible moments”.

Since making his debut in 2015 with Leganes B, Madrid-born de Miguel played for eight other clubs in Spain.

He joined Tenerife on a three-year deal in 2025 after making his professional debut with Castellon in August 2024 at the age of 27, having top-scored with 16 goals as his side were promoted to the second division in the 2023-2024 season.
