Irish middle-distance runner Ciara Mageean, who won European gold and competed at two Olympic Games, has died aged 34, her family has announced.

“At 6:30am this morning, Ciara lost her battle with cancer surrounded by her loved ones,” said a statement posted on the athlete’s Instagram account on Sunday.

Mageean’s death comes just weeks after she married her long-term boyfriend in Belfast.

She had been receiving treatment for bowel cancer, revealing her diagnosis in July 2025 and subsequently disclosing that the disease was at an advanced stage.

Originally from Portaferry in County Down, Northern Ireland, Mageean established herself as one of the island of Ireland’s leading middle-distance runners, setting several records in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

She represented the republic at the 2016 Rio Olympics, at the Tokyo Games held in 2021, and in her greatest sporting achievement – in 2024 when, she claimed the 1,500 metres title at the European Athletics Championships in Rome.

But an Achilles tendon injury prevented her from competing at the Paris Olympics that year.

Mageean remained remarkably positive throughout her period of illness, saying she was “continuing to find the joy in everyday” as she thanked people for their support following her diagnosis.

Speaking to the BBC in June, she said she was “grateful” for having a career “that many others didn’t get to have”.

Tributes poured in for Mageean, who also won European bronze and silver in the 1,500m (in 2016 and 2022, respectively) and finished second in the event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

“The country has lost a hero,” the Olympic Federation of Ireland said in a statement.

“Beyond the medals, records and sporting accolades, Ciara will be remembered for her warmth, courage and tremendous strength of character,” said Northern Ireland’s First Minister Michelle O’Neill.

The Republic of Ireland’s prime minister, Taoiseach Micheal Martin, said he was “deeply saddened” by Mageean’s “untimely passing”.

2026 Dakar Youth Olympics: Kenya’s Baseball5 Team Scents Medal After Toppling France and Mexico

Kenya’s baseball5 team at the Dakar Youth Olympics is confident of winning a medal after securing a semi-final ticket, having beaten France and Mexico.

Kenya's Baseball5 team is making a strong statement at the ongoing Youth Olympic Games defying world rankings to book a place in the semi-finals after impressive victories over France and Mexico.

Ranked 10th in the world, Kenya has already accounted for two of the competition's highly-rated sides, beating world number three France 2-1 in their opening Group A match before following it up with a 2-0 victory over fifth-ranked Mexico in their second encounter at Tour de l'Oeuf on Saturday.

The victory over France was particularly remarkable, considering the Kenyan team had arrived in Senegal on the morning of the match, leaving the players with little time to rest, acclimatise and prepare for the challenge.

Against Mexico, Kenya once again had to dig deep, showing resilience and determination to overcome a side that had previously defeated the country's junior team at last year's World Cup.

For captain Shantel Lucianah, the victories have come with the weight of expectation, but the team's unity and determination have helped them navigate the pressure of representing Kenya on the international stage.

Lucianah says courage, hard work and the support players give one another have been central to the team's success, particularly when mistakes happen during matches.

She also credits the team's intensive preparations, revealing that training sessions have stretched from morning until evening as the players worked towards their Olympic ambitions.

With a semi-final place already secured, the Kenyan captain says the team is determined to beat Syria in their final group-stage encounter and complete a perfect group campaign with three victories from three matches.

For Brighton Omondi Kelly, the victory over Mexico carried an added emotional significance.

Mexico had defeated Kenya's junior team at last year's World Cup, with several of those players now forming part of the senior squad. That defeat had remained a source of disappointment, providing additional motivation for the Kenyans heading into Saturday's encounter.

Kelly admitted that the team's performance was not particularly strong, but praised the players' mentality and determination in securing both sets against an opponent they had never faced at this level before.

Head coach Joel Wangicho was pleased with his team's ability to rise to the occasion against two highly ranked opponents, although he acknowledged that there is still room for improvement.

Wangicho says Kenya capitalised on the mistakes made by their opponents but will work on correcting areas that need improvement as the competition enters the decisive stages.

The coach also revealed plans to rotate the squad in the remaining group-stage matches, including the encounter against Syria, giving more players an opportunity to feature while managing the demands of the competition.

Kenya will be looking to maintain its winning momentum against Syria before turning its attention to the semi-finals.

The Baseball5 competition is also making its debut at the Youth Olympic Games, adding another layer of excitement to an event that is already delivering thrilling contests and unexpected results.

For Kenya, the mission is now bigger than simply reaching the semi-finals. Having overcome France and Mexico despite arriving on competition day and having to dig deep against formidable opposition, the East Africans will be keen to carry that momentum into the knockout stages.

Rankings may have placed Kenya behind some of its opponents, but on the court, the world number 10 is proving that determination, teamwork and belief can make all the difference.

Will Bayern and Ajax Send Academy Kids or Legends to Kenya? Government Responds

The government has revealed the identity of the Bayern Munich and Ajax Amsterdam players who will grace the friendly match at Talanta Stadium in January.

Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi has confirmed that the planned friendly between Bayern Munich and Ajax Amsterdam at Talanta Stadium will involve their senior teams.

There has been speculation that the two sides might send their academy players or legends to Kenya for the match, which will officially open the Talanta Stadium on January 5, 2027.

However, Mwangi says the contract signed between Kenya and the European football giants is for their star-studded senior teams to grace the match.

“I want to put it on record that the teams that will be coming will be the main team,” said Mwangi.

“The team that we have approached is the main team and it will be the team that will be coming in January.”

Further, Mwangi has also explained how the game will be funded following revelations that both sides will be paid in excess of Ksh1 billion in appearance fees, besides Kenya catering for their travel and accommodation.

“We are not using government money, we have gone ahead and gotten sponsors who are coming and they have supported and that is why that team will be coming,” he added.

Mwangi also defended the government's decision to invite European teams at the expense of local ones, saying what they will bring to the country cannot be matched by the Kenyan sides.

“Those two teams have a following of over 300 million people. We have our teams here like Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards who will also be playing on that pitch but if we bring teams that have a following of over 300 million people, what does that mean?” he posed.

“We will be displaying what we have as a country,” Mwangi further stated.
