Students at Nyabisase Mixed Secondary School in Bobasi, Kisii County, attacked a multi-agency team investigating suspected examination malpractice during the ongoing 2026 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.
The Thursday, November 5 incident involved officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) and National Intelligence Service (NIS), who had visited the institution following reports of suspected examination irregularities.
However, before the detectives arrived, students allegedly turned violent and attacked the police officers and KNEC officials.
During the confrontation, the students reportedly seized a Ceska pistol from a police officer and held onto it for nearly three hours before it was recovered.
Kisii County Police Commander Ronald Kirui confirmed the incident, stating that several police officers and KNEC officials sustained injuries.
The incident also left Corporal Leonard Siele missing. Reports indicate that he was seriously assaulted during the confrontation, with police efforts to establish his whereabouts ongoing.
The students also reportedly damaged a Toyota Succeed belonging to the missing officer and stole personal belongings from the vehicle.
Anti-riot police officers were subsequently deployed to the school as investigations into the incident continued.
The investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the suspected examination malpractice, the attack on the officials and the disappearance of the police officer.
