A police officer in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County, has reportedly been arrested after his service pistol and two mobile phones went missing under unclear circumstances while he was watching the Premier League clash between Arsenal and Liverpool.

Police Constable Duncan Ogeto was taken into custody following the disappearance of his government-issued firearm, which was reportedly loaded with 15 rounds of 9mm ammunition.

According to reports, Ogeto had been temporarily assigned to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) office in Trans Nzoia West to assist a multi-agency team handling an ongoing investigation.

The incident is said to have occurred on Sunday night at around 9pm when the officer visited a local entertainment establishment in Kitale town to watch the highly anticipated football match.

After leaving the premises, Ogeto reportedly proceeded to an area opposite Bongo Hotel, where he sat down and allegedly complained of exhaustion before falling asleep.

He is said to have remained there until approximately 11pm, when two DCI officers, identified as Sergeant Lubisa and Corporal Kimonge, reportedly came across him and woke him up.

It was only after regaining consciousness that Ogeto allegedly realised his service pistol and two mobile phones, an Oppo and a Tecno, were missing.

The disappearance of the firearm, particularly with its 15 rounds of ammunition, raised serious security concerns, given the potential danger of an unaccounted-for police weapon falling into the wrong hands.

Following the incident, the constable was arrested and placed in police custody as investigations were launched to establish how the firearm disappeared and whether it could be recovered.

He is reportedly facing possible charges related to the negligent loss of a government-issued firearm.

The incident has once again highlighted the responsibility placed on police officers to maintain custody of their assigned weapons, with authorities now expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the disappearance.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
