ODM Communication Director Philip Etale has mourned the death of veteran journalist Jack Kwemba, describing him as one of the greatest men to have ever graced Kenya’s media industry.
In a heartfelt tribute shared on Tuesday, Etale said Kwemba was one of the seniors in the profession who held his hand when he was learning the ropes in journalism.
“When I was learning the ropes in the field of journalism, Jack Kwemba is one of those seniors in the profession who held my hand, helped me sharpen my skills and taught me sports journalism,” Etale said.
He described Kwemba as a good writer and storyteller, whose contribution to Kenyan journalism will be remembered for years to come.
“One of the greatest men to have ever graced Kenya’s media industry. A good writer and storyteller. Sad evening bro. So long my senior and mentor,” Etale added.
Kwemba was widely known for his work in sports journalism, where he covered major sporting events and mentored a generation of young journalists who went on to build successful careers in the media.
His death has sparked grief across the media fraternity, with colleagues, friends and former mentees sharing tributes and memories of working with him.
Many described him as humble, professional, generous with knowledge, and passionate about telling the Kenyan sports story with accuracy and depth.
Etale’s tribute reflects the close bond between the two, with the ODM communication boss crediting Kwemba for shaping his early career and instilling in him the discipline and ethics of journalism.
The media industry has lost a mentor, a teacher and a storyteller whose legacy lives on in the journalists he mentored.
By the time of publishing, details on the cause of death and burial arrangements had not been officially released by the family.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
